the last beer

When one heads to a dry town you must plan accordingly. My thoughts were that I would stay  7-10 days in Fort Smith, so 42 beers would be perfect. One for lunch, one for the evening rise, and two for the evening. In Saint Xavier I made my purchases

I’ve been here for 19 days and had my last beer during yesterdays evening rise.

So what’s a guy to do? I hear Wyoming has some good fishing and beer, yes beer.

Brown vs Rainbow

Before coming to Montana the brown trout was undoubtably my favorite species of trout. This was because brook trout are technically a Char and Pennsylvania rainbows are usually stocked from hatcheries. My first Montana trout was a rainbow of generous size. The past few weeks has produced  a 50/50 split between rainbow and browns. The rainbows jump and run while the browns dive deep and pull. So they both have their place in my heart for wild trout, but when it comes to big fish the browns win. Why? Because they look prehistoric and aggressive.

the beard

is just something that an aspiring trout bum needs. Truth is I’ve rocked a beard from the time I could grow one in college. Sure I would be much more handsome without it, but it’s just not me to shave everyday. So cheers to the bearded people of the world and the respect they gain on trout streams across America.

single fish days

I’ve been rowing the boat for a couple from New York the past two days. It was great fun playing “guide” and a good break from fishing hard. Single fish days aren’t so bad…

Carpin’ on the Horn

Me and Nol found a sweet carp spot on a side channel of the Big Horn River. The first day the carp eluded us but we put the screws to them on day two. My first carp on the fly rod (4 wt.) and Nol getting dirty on his hundred-thousandth.

the Big Horn, Montana

I’ve been bumming around Fort Smith, Montana for almost a full week now. Great things have occurred. Meeting awesome people, eating well, relaxing, and most importantly catching fish.

How Small A Trout

Maybe your stature as a fly fisherman isn't determined by how big a trout you can catch, but by how small a trout you can catch without being disappointed. -- John Gierach
