My roommate (mom) politely asked me to remove the beer bottle from my window, she said it wasn’t the nicest site when she pulled in the driveway over the past few days. After shoveling the driveway I sat at my desk and noticed a few more beer bottles tucked around a mess of feathers, hooks, papers, and the general clutter of fly fishing stuff.
A panfish popper caught my eye, it was a friends who left it up at the lake house last summer. My mind drifted between thoughts of bluegill and the mess of a room I was living in. I tossed the popper to the side and decided to do a load of laundry.
As the laundry rumbled away my thoughts went back to poppers and panfish. Before I headed out West there were a few good hours tucked in between trout trips to search for panfish. I remember how nice the sun felt as those poppers were sucked down by feisty fish and how great cold beer is while wearing shorts. I grabbed that popper and a rod as I walked out the door with the clouds darkening with snow.
About half the pond had melted away, giving me the chance to test a new line and give that popper some strips. One bluegill gave a weak rise before my fingers grew too numb to warrant more casting. The laundry never got folded but the beer bottle made its way to the recycling.

When an angler has fished enough days they develop a sense for expectations, when set high there is often let down but when set low there is just a fine appriacation for the act of fishing. I had never fished in salt water with a fly rod and had never travelled so far South, these things changed last week with a trip to the Florida Keys. The trip wasn’t about the fishing but I had to take a rod and give it a try.
I did some research beforehand and found that a guided trip would be my best bet for targeting the flats fish. Unable to afford a guide I reached out to a few following addicts. Brent, from Uprising shared solid advice for searching out DIY flats fishing in both Biscayne Bay and the local canals. Dylan, from BadFishAngling shared a spot for redfish and bonefish in the Keys, he also shared the tip that “its going to be real tough”. Thanks to both of these guys.
The recent weather was cold for Florida and this trend pushed the fish off the flats. My expectations were only to wade the flats and wave a fly rod in the air with a big grin on my face. What I got was the best skunking of my life. I spotted needlefish, rays, pufferfish, and something the looked like a bonefish. A special thanks to my girlfriend for shooting some photos. I will catch a bonefish before its all over.

Maybe your stature as a fly fisherman isn't determined by how big a trout you can catch, but by how small a trout you can catch without being disappointed. -- John Gierach
